چکیده
Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) provide valuable insights into the nature of solar system surfaces, facilitating geological analysis, landing site selection and characterisation, contextualising in situ measurements. For missions to bodies for which orbiters soft landed platforms are technologically or financially challenging achieve, low mass descent ascent probes (e.g. planetary penetrators) an alternative means by access atmosphere and/or surface, a platform from image surface range altitudes perspectives. This paper presents study concept large-coverage stereophotogrammetry, whereby stereo geometry vertically offset wide-angle images is used measure topography over region large extent. To do this, we simulate Mars' Gale Crater using coverage, high resolution DTM area, derive topographic measurements matching pairs simulated images. These compared directly with original characterise their accuracy, dependence elevation measurement accuracy on thus investigated. pair given altitude (corresponding its lower image), error found have minimum value at horizontal distance between 1 3 times altitude. point imaging location, 0.2 0.5 this achieve best accuracy. Surface appearance, change two pair, significant impact performance, limiting baseline length optimum 0.2–0.4 image's altitude, resulting occurrence occlusions blind spots, particularly oblique viewing angles.

Furthermore, for encoding the object shape a special illumination is adapted which maps a sequence of about 20 statistically generated patterns onto the object (see figure 1). Therefore, every point of the object surface is characterized by an individual sequence of intensity values. This approach makes it possible to use a single sensor element for allocating homologous points. It is not neces...
متن کاملDefining the topography of a planetary body.
R ivers develop on planetary bodies from the interplay of climate and topography. In planetary contexts, rivers and their effects are used to constrain shortand long-term climate models. However, rivers are also controlled by the shortand long-wavelength topography of the planetary surface. Rivers thus provide a means to constrain the generation of topography. On page 727 of this issue, Black e...
متن کاملPlanetary Cliff Descent Using Cooperative Robots
Future robotic planetary exploration will need to traverse geographically diverse and challenging terrain. Cliffs, ravines, and fissures are of great scientific interest because they may contain important data regarding past water flow and past life. Highly sloped terrain is difficult and often impossible to safely navigate using a single robot. This paper describes a control system for a team ...
متن کاملAccuracy in Automated Stereophotogrammetry
The design of an optimum configuration for the components of an automated stereophotogrammetry system involves careful selection of system parameters against application criteria such as field of view, desired depth accuracy and available camera system constraints. Here, we focus on the desired accuracy in measurements within a scene and treat other system parameters as constraints on obtainabl...
